Today, the Honourable Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, announced that the Ontario Government is directing Ontario’s regulatory colleges, including CDHO, to begin developing the regulatory framework for future changes to scopes of practice. These changes will permit RDHs to: 

• Order x-rays
• Be designated Radiation Protection Officers
• Prescribe and administer local anaesthetic by injection in the orofacial complex

With this directive, CDHO will engage in the work necessary to bring these elements into practice. This includes updating the existing regulatory framework, developing new Standards of Practice, identifying the competency profiles for these elements, and establishing a credentialing process. 

Some of this work is in progress, but we still have much to do. Please note that at this time, there are no changes to the Scope of Practice. We will keep you updated on our progress as we develop these elements.

CDHO is pleased to engage in the work that will realize these changes, increasing the public’s access to safe, competent and comprehensive oral health care. We look forward to working with the profession and other system partners to implement these changes.
