Apply for a Specialty (Restorative) Certificate

Registered Dental Hygienists who wish to practise as a Restorative Dental Hygienist must hold a Specialty Certificate of Registration. There are three paths depending on your situation:

Path 1 – RDHs currently registered with CDHO

If you are currently registered and wish to obtain a Specialty Certificate, you must first hold a General Certificate of Registration and:

  1. Have completed one of the following:
    1. An approved restorative Dental Hygiene program within the last three years.
    2. An approved restorative Dental Hygiene program more than three years ago and have either:
      1. been practising restorative Dental Hygiene in another jurisdiction within the last three years; or
      2. taken an approved restorative refresher course within the last 18 months.
  2. Apply for a Specialty Certificate of Registration.

Path 2 Individuals from another Canadian jurisdiction

  1. Currently hold a Specialty Certificate or equivalent registration in another Canadian province or territory that authorizes restorative Dental Hygiene.
  2. Apply for a General Certificate of Registration with CDHO before applying for a Specialty Certificate.
  3. Once approved for a General Certificate of Registration and if you meet the criteria in 1. above, apply for a Specialty Certificate.

Path 3 Individuals from outside Canada

  1. Currently hold an equivalent registration in a country that authorizes restorative Dental Hygiene.
  2. Apply for a General Certificate of Registration with CDHO before applying for a Specialty Certificate.
  3. Once approved for a General Certificate of Registration and if you meet the criteria in 1. above, apply for a Specialty Certificate.

You cannot practise restorative Dental Hygiene until CDHO approves the application. This can take up to 10 business days once the completed application is received.

Approved Restorative Dental Hygiene Programs

CDHO has approved the programs below. If you are applying from restorative dental hygiene programs not approved by CDHO, you must complete a self-evaluation of your program. CDHO’s Registration Committee will review the program and determine whether it is approved. See instructions in the Guide to the Self-Evaluation of a Restorative Dental Hygiene Program. Please allow an additional 4-6 weeks for review of your course of study.
