Since CDHO’s Council rescinded the Standard for Authorization to Self-Initiate Profession-Specific Acts, we have received several questions about independent dental hygiene practice. The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) and the Ontario Dental Hygienists’ Association (ODHA) have a wealth of resources to support dental hygienists on this journey if they choose. Whether you just want to explore this topic or have already opened your own practice, the CDHA Independent Practice Network and the ODHA Independent Practice Member Benefits are helpful resources. Both associations have courses, advisors and an online community for support. You can also view Chapter 10 of CDHO’s Registrants’ Handbook for more information.
